Is it still scarf season? I'm in the Pacific Northwest. One day it's a warm-ish 55 degrees with sunshine, and the next I'm freezing in gloomy 28 degree weather. I'm going to say yes, it's still scarf season. If not here, than somewhere!
But don’t rely on my temperature, whether I’m hot or freezing. Perimenopause is no forking joke! One minute I’m covered in blankets, and the next I’m sweating in front of the fan in a tank top. Not recommended. Zero stars.
My hormones are not why you’re here, though. You’re here for the YARN! Let’s get into it.
The first time I bought Cloud Cake yarn was at S.C.R.A.P in Portland, Oregon. It’s a resell art store I found on Instagram one day. My sister and I went soon after to see what all the buzz was about.
There were shopping bags and barrels of yarn against the wall as soon as you walked in with a sign that said, “Fill Your Bag for $4.” You didn’t have to tell me twice!
I grabbed a shopping bag, and we started sifting through the barrels of yarn, not even knowing what we were looking for specifically. The deal was so good that it felt like I was stealing, so I made sure to only fill my bag half way and leave some yarn for the next crafter.
There was so much to look at in that store! Everything was donated by other artists who didn’t want their unused materials to end up in a landfill. I respect that. I also respect the graffiti on the outside wall of S.C.R.A.P. that my sister and I took a selfie in front of, but that’s all I have to say on that topic. Back to art supplies…
Yes, I bought that Deluxe Bedazzler kit! I still remember sitting in front of the tube TV watching those commercials, knowing I wanted to to live a colorful, artistic life when I grew up. I never did get a Bedazzler back then, though. But I have one now, and that’s all that matters!
I didn’t know what a cloud cake was, or that I had even bought one from S.C.R.A.P. because the label was missing. Most labels were missing. Some yarn had to be frogged to reuse. As soon as my hand hit that cloud-like yarn I knew I had to find out what it was and where to get more of it!
It was love at first touch.
My sister must’ve thrown this cake in my bag while we were going wild at those yarn barrels. We made a plan to hunt down this mystery yarn at Michaels. But first, I had to crochet a frog with some of the yarn I purchased second hand. Frogs. Portland. You kno
A week later, it was off to Michaels to hunt down more cloud cakes!
I miss Joann. May her inventory rest in pieces that now hold memories for so many of us artists. I was excited to see the new Knit and Sew Shop already set up at Michaels. Now, where to start?
I knew it was a cake, and the color looked gradient from white to blue. The yarn also had a slight halo. I started with Caron cakes since they’re pretty popular here. I felt like a child, touching everything. But I had to find this heavenly yarn!
Caron Blossom Cakes were close, but not close enough. Even the skein of bamboo felt closer to this mysterious yarn. After my sister and I combed through all of the inventory at Michaels, we left empty handed.
Well, not completely empty handed.
I bought some bulky yarn for hats, worsted weight yarn for wrist warmers, and a Caron Big Cake to start a hexagon cardigan for myself. Oh, and a granny square set of pattern cards.
That night I researched soft yarn cakes online with my fingers crossed. I was ready to gamble with an online order for delivery.
Can you believe that Yarnspirations won’t sell all their Caron Cakes online? Some cakes and colors are exclusively available at Michaels. Talk about irritating!
Back to Michaels I went, but this time online. These Caron Groovy Cloud Cakes looked sooooo close to what I was hunting for!
While I waited for my online order to show up, I started making a scarf with the super soft mystery yarn I bought second hand.
This yarn was a dream to work with.
I finished the scarf in two days using the moss stitch with fringe on the bottom sides. This stitch is a new favorite of mine because of how I can get lost in it. I love a good mindless stitch. It’s like meditation for me.
And then it arrived.
I was right! Oh my gosh… I WAS RIGHT! My gamble had paid off because this was the same yarn. Caron Groovy Cloud Cakes. Who knew? I bought the color Icy Lime and made another scarf.
So that’s my story on how I accidentally bought, hunted down, and found cloud cake yarn. I highly recommend this Caron Cake to everyone! It comes in so many colors, too. I wonder which one I’ll buy next. Hmm, maybe Candy Bowl with all of its rainbow of colors.
